Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a Chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid.
- The game is played by two opponents, with each player having 16 pieces, known as "men," or "pieces."
- The object of the game is to checkmate the enemy king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in "check") and cannot escape from capture by a series of moves.
- The game is played in turns with each player making one move at a time.
- The player with the white pieces moves first.
- The player with the black pieces can then move in response, or pass, meaning they forfeit their turn.
- If the player with the white pieces does not move, the player with the black pieces may choose to move again, or pass.
- It is the duty of the player with the white pieces to move.
